Nanocellulose Based Aerogels for Varying Engineering Applications

Résumé

Nanocellulose is a sustainable, renewable and eco-friendly nanomaterial with fascinating properties like high strength, low density, high specific surface area, high aspect ratio etc. Nanocellulose surface comprises of large number of hydroxyl groups which facilitates a wide range of surface chemistries and can be tailored for specific applications. These properties of nanocellulose suggests huge potential for various engineering applications. This unique property makes them as a promising candidate for various applications. Now a days, the innovative nanocellulose aerogels have gained substantial attention in the scientific community due to their renewability, good mechanical properties, low density, high porosity, natural biodegradability, and environmental friendliness. These attractive properties facilitate the use of nanocellulose aerogels in various environmental and engineering applications. This article reviews recent attempts to apply nanocellulose aerogels as efficient materials for water purification, air filtration, flame retardancy, oil absorption etc.
